Abstract
Background and Objectives: Attempts to identify the mechanism underlying tinnitus and to develop effective treatments have been frustrating, in part because there are no objective measures of tinnitus. Tinnitus is often a feature of primary ear disease usually with associated hearing loss, so the present study focused on the tinnitus patients with normal hearing. The purpose of this study is to evaluate tinnitus objectively, the cochlear mechanical activity of tinnitus patients was studied using DPOAE (distortion product otoacoustic emission).

Materials and Method: 29 tinnitus patients (34 ear) with normal hearing and 34 normal hearing individuals (61 ear) were included in this study. The amplitude and latecny of DPOAE, tinnitus match test were measured.

Results: Significant decrease in DPOAE amplitude over a limited frequency range were observed in 50% of the normal hearing tinnitus group and in 22.9% of control group. DPOAE amplitude of tinnitus patients at 6 and 8 kHz (p<0.05) were significantly lower than normal. The averaged latency was no statistical significance. The subjective frequency of the tinnitus, as judged by the pitch match test, was within the low DPOAE amplitude range of the DP-gram in 50%.

Conclusion: The amplitude of DPOAE exhibited a tendency to decrease. But the pitch matched tinnitus frequency range was out of the frequency range in tinnitus group. More study using DPOAE in tinnitus patients with normal hearing is needed.
